Home Depot hackers used vendor log-on to steal data, emails

Home Depot hackers used vendor log-on to steal data, emails

Hackers used a vendor’s stolen log-on credentials to penetrate Home Depot’s computer network and install custom-built malware that stole customer payment-card data and e-mail addresses, the retailer announced Thursday. The malware, Malwarewhich had not been seen in other data thefts, was installed on self-checkout registers that were hacked. The malware was designed to evade antivirus software and has since been eliminated, Home Depot officials said. The company had announced in September that the massive data breach allowed criminals to harvest information from 56 million credit and debit cards in the United States and Canada.

Equifax Confirms 'Probable' Breached Data Was Indeed Stolen

Equifax says that its digital forensic investigators have found that while its tally of 145.5 million U.S. breach victims hasn't changed, more of them had their email addresses, tax identification numbers and driver's license information exfiltrated.

"On Sept. 7, Equifax announced that the information accessed in the cybersecurity incident primarily included names, Social Security numbers, birthdates, addresses, drivers' license numbers and in in some instances, credit card numbers and certain dispute documents with personal identifying...

Leak of 23,000 Private Keys Triggers Security Scramble

Leak of 23,000 Private Keys Triggers Security Scramble

Digital certificate reseller Trustico is sparring with certificate authority DigiCert, which recently took over Symantec's digital certificate business, over a serious security incident.

In dueling press releases, both companies accuse the other of unorthodox procedures regarding 23,000 digital certificates issued by Trustico. The private keys of those certificates have been leaked.

Digital security certificates create an encrypted connection using public key cryptography, typically indicated by "https" and a padlock appearing in the URL window of a browser. Browsing traffic can be intercepted, but if the data traffic is encrypted, it can't be read.

Trustico isn't saying how the 23,000 certificates may have been compromised. But the...
